I feel paralyzed helping job seekers....
I dont cry. But lately, I think "how the hell did this happen to me?" My body is always on the verge of just numb and eyes just start to feel watery blurry.
I convince myself there are more people worse off than I am. Things could be worse for me ... just look at the people on the streets.
Over the weekend, I had coffee with an attorney. He was telling me of some of his friends who were high powered attorneys and unemployed. A few of them have families and their homes are in foreclosure. Those are the people that I really feel for. When I hear those stories, I feel even more paralyzed. One of the challenges for me personally is that I hear these issues everyday. I'm not getting immune from these stories, but these stories are staying with me all day...all of them... cumulatively.
One of the only times I dont feel helpless is at my PinkSlipMixers.com events. For those few hours, they just seem to forget about being unemployed and the events are their "job". I think the interaction with others gives them some purpose and their substitute for work. I know I'm only just helping 30 or 40 people a night, but it makes me forget I have problems.
I'm trying to be as positive as possible. I really need to concentrate on myself, but when I do that the community project just seems to stall. And when it stalls, I get flack from what "monday morning mixer quarterbacks". I know I should find more recruiters. I know I should find more quality job seekers to network with. I know I should find sponsors to fund this project. I know I shouldnt air out "how I feel because I'm the leader of the unemployed and if I show negativity then its bad". I fucking know already.
I know I need to concentrate on me. I know more people are worse off. I know many people dont have anyone to turn to. At least I have friends and family to turn to.
Even though I know... how can I help me when others are worse off than me.
I dont know how I am going to continue to do this. I dont know if I want to find a job. I dont know how to pay for gas. I dont know when I'll have a life again. I just dont know any more.
Lets get this recession done with.
ps: I dont fucking want to do MLM opportunities... I see YOUR fucking vision so dont throw that in my face. I'm a fan of network marketing but I dont have $500 to join and neither do my other unemployed friends.

Call for Volunteerism! Need Organizers for PinkSlipMixers.com Events
This is a big call for volunteerism to help out our unemployed community and get each other back on our feet. I am looking for organizers for our regular PinkSlipMixers.com job networking mixers. If a few of you in each city can handle one event per month that would be great. This is a very rewarding feeling.
I need organizers for a few reasons. First off, my savings are depleted and can no longer afford gas, food and other travel costs. Second, I am hoping to organize events across the country and need to devote more time to find organizers who believe in the "Pay It Forward" concept. Third, I am organizing the World's Largest Job Search Networking event scheduled on September 7 (LABOR DAY) and also need to concentrate on the logistics for that event.
I really believe if we all band together, we can make this movement a successful one. With your help we can make a difference and provide hope that people care.

Even though I have less than $200 in my bank account and the EDD cut off my unemployment benefits for the dumbest reason (stupid State of California), I want make the best networking events for all of us before I go insane.

SAN JOSE, CA - May 14, 2009 – San Jose's local hot spot, South First Billiards, is paying it forward to the community to help revitalize not only the SOFA district in the Downtown San Jose area, but wants to reach out to job seekers and hiring companies in hopes that Silicon Valley can get through these challenging economic times. Partnering with PinkSlipMixers.com, a grass-roots organization of unemployed professionals that provides unique “pink slip party” networking events, South First Billiards will be hosting monthly interactive job search events every second Monday of the month.
Known as one of the largest interactive nightlife and creative art displays in the San Jose Downtown area, South First Billiards wants to pay it forward and give back to the community that has supported them for almost 20 years. Ben Soriano of South First Billiards says, “We were introduced to the PinkSlipMixers job networking concept by one of our patrons last month. As soon as we heard that they are a grass-roots organization of professionals that are being proactive to find jobs, we knew we needed to offer space to help them get through these challenging economic times and find work for one another. Over the years our venue has supported the art community and we now need to support the general community at large. If we can provide access for job seekers and hiring companies to communicate with each other face-to-face, maybe they will find their next job or at the very least interact with others during their job search. We feel it is the right thing to do to revitalize our local job market.”
The PinkSlipMixers.com event is more than the typical pink slip party, a popular and growing trend around the country. Job seekers at PinkSlipMixer events utilize online social media to “Twitter” career criteria along with their Linkedin.com resume in hopes of maximizing their job search exposure. Edwin Duterte, the creator of PinkSlipMixers.com, explains, “South First Billiards is a great venue for our job seekers. They have two ten foot video screens that we will project Twitter-feeds. Our guests will be posting what other guests are looking for professionally and what recruiters attending want in an employee. For instance, a job seeker talking to a hiring manager might twitter post using her cell phone 'Recruiter Jon wearing the striped shirt is looking for a product manager'. Guests in the mixer will see that on the video screens and hopefully other job seekers looking for that type of position will find Jon to discuss a possible fit.”
In addition to merging the online and offline communities, PinkSlipMixers will be making the job search mixer experience more interactive and specialized than any other typical pink slip party. Edwin Duterte says, “We not only want to have our professionals interact with one another, but we want to make it personal to them. We will have at least a dozen different industry tables where our guests can congregate and mingle with professionals specific to their job focus. Also, we will have a 'speed career circuit' whereby we will have experts in various job search stations, such as resume critique, interview skills, and etc., to offer free job search tips to our PinkSlipMixers.com members. This is not a job fair but a volunteer supported community that every member wants to pitch in to help each other find work. It will be very exciting to see everyone helping each other in a positive way.”

What I learned the first 3 months of unemployment...
(Edwin Duterte started PinkSlipMixers.com to network with mid- to upper- level professionals. The concept is to form a "job networking community" and have events that are interactive, both online and at live events.)
I hate to admit, but the happiest day and most scariest day of my professional life was January 13, 2008. I was a rising commercial real estate professional earning a six figure income at a prestigious bank. On that day, I walked into work at 8:00 AM and cautiously nervous because the day before the HR manager asked me to come to a meeting that I had to attend.
The bank laid off over 20% of their workforce.
For me, I was happy because my commute of over 2.5 hours a day was over and, being smart and well-qualified for lending jobs, I am very hire-able. I was scared because if the bank was laying off that many people, what did that say about the economy.
At any rate, I was going to be unemployed and wanted to make the most of it. After 20 years of hard labor with little vacation, I thought this would be a great opportunity to take off. I told my girlfriend at the time that I wouldn't even dust off my resume or call my contacts for 3 months. That was the wrong strategy.
Even though I needed a mental break, what I should have done was cultivate my warm circle to have them send out the "feelers" that I'm available. I needed to tell as many people that I knew to look out for me instead of hanging out at the beach. I could have still gone to the beach, but should have been more smart about it.
The lesson you should take from my mistake is that even though you are going to take a "mental vacation", keep networking and let people know you are open to opportunities. If you find a job in this market, the company really needs you. You can always tell the company that you need another week or two of vacation before you start working.
In this market, be open to taking a shorter break.

I am like you... unemployed.
I'm like you....
... unemployed looking for work.
Over 15 months ago, I was an experienced 20+ year commercial real estate lending professional. I had responsibilities at my career and wanted more. I was climbing the banking corporate ladder making my way to be smarter than all my peers. I was liked by upper management and loved by all my co-workers. I devoted my life to being a professional; often times at the expense of my social life.
Financially, I was making a six figure income. Every paycheck I devoted the maximum 15% towards my 401(k) retirement and at minimum 15% of take home into my 'rainy day savings'. I lived frugally because I remember the recession of the early 80s and then 90s. I was feeling good because I had big money in the bank. The only vice I had was I was feeding my side business OneKeyAway.com because that was my real passion. I thought no matter what happens, I have cash in the bank to float me for anything that can happen at work. I was doing the right thing for ME personally.
Then on January 13, 2008 after weeks of uncertainty at the bank, I was called into the HR office with 6 other colleagues in the room and 6 others on a conference call. We were told the bank is changing focus and commercial real estate construction lending needed to shrink.
Yes. I was being laid off.
My first reaction was "Cool... Now I'll do what I've been wanting to do, which was to continue my side project as well as maybe relax from working for 'The Man'." Three months later, the project I was diligently working towards failed and my then-girlfriend said that I should really consider finding a real job.
She was right. I needed to find a job at that point.
In May 2008, I attended my first job fair in 18 years. I walked out of my car with suit and tie on, resume in portfolio at my side and great attitude buzzing to find a job. This will be easy. I know my profession and will land a job with one eye-to-eye handshake. Employers get ready to hire me!
Upon entering the building into the job fair, I noticed young, bright-eyed professionals probably fresh out of "B" School, which didn't faze me at that time because I have experience. Then I walked into the cold convention room itself. The job event was a cattle call with hundreds of job seekers and a handful of booths (mostly education pushers or military/police/public service)
Lines and lines of people not talking but waiting in line to talk to the public service hiring manager or the insurance sales "recruiter". I observed that when a person finally had the opportunity to talk to a 'recruiter', they did their 20 second 'elevator pitch'. However, I don't think the recruiters were listening. I sensed that the recruiters didn't care and placed the candidates' resumes in a pile dreading the work they just created.
My instinct reaction was that the recruiters were "Rockstars" and this was their time to shine. The candidates were fans and stalking groupies that the rockstars wont remember after 4:45 pm that day.
I left the fair disappointed. I am not an entry level job seeker. Even though I live in La La Land, I don't believe in cattle calls. Job fairs just were not for an experienced career-oriented professional.
After weeks of agonizing and reliving my job fair experience, I had an appiphany.
* What could happen if we network with everyone in the room, job seekers and recruiters alike, to share resources?
* What are the possibilities if everyone talked with each other to find out who they know to who they know to find a job for each other?
* What can be accomplished if job seekers worked along side other job seekers and not considered each other competition but as friends to help one another out?
* How many people can we help if every recruiter helped out a job seeker even if that job seeker wasn't a commission check for them?
I called my other unemployed friends like Chelle, Kelly and Jen about my idea that we host events initially for job seekers to network with each other. Everyone thought it was silly because it didn't create obvious value to the job seeker.
I disagreed.
My vision of the event was to create a community where everyone will "Pay It Forward" and will think about someone else before they think about themselves. The value of my vision is that everyone will be each other's eyes to available jobs, published or not-yet-announced. We will act as a collective and everyone will benefit. It's a crazy idea but I think it will work.
Thus, the birth of PinkSlipMixers.com.
Over the next few post, I will give my more insight as to what PinkSlipMixers.com events are, more elaborate explanations of the evolution of the events, share some tips to make job searching a more enjoyable experience and feature other job seekers I meet throughout this unemployment journey.

Over 15 months ago, I was an experienced 20+ year commercial real estate lending professional. I had responsibilities at my career and wanted more. I was climbing the banking corporate ladder making my way to be smarter than all my peers. I was liked by upper management and loved by all my co-workers. I devoted my life to being a professional; often times at the expense of my social life.
Financially, I was making a six figure income. Every paycheck I devoted the maximum 15% towards my 401(k) retirement and at minimum 15% of take home into my 'rainy day savings'. I lived frugally because I remember the recession of the early 80s and then 90s. I was feeling good because I had big money in the bank. The only vice I had was I was feeding my side business OneKeyAway.com because that was my real passion. I thought no matter what happens, I have cash in the bank to float me for anything that can happen at work. I was doing the right thing for ME personally.
Then on January 13, 2008 after weeks of uncertainty at the bank, I was called into the HR office with 6 other colleagues in the room and 6 others on a conference call. We were told the bank is changing focus and commercial real estate construction lending needed to shrink.
Yes. I was being laid off.
My first reaction was "Cool... Now I'll do what I've been wanting to do, which was to continue my side project as well as maybe relax from working for 'The Man'." Three months later, the project I was diligently working towards failed and my then-girlfriend said that I should really consider finding a real job.
She was right. I needed to find a job at that point.
